Compliance With NIH Public Access and IEEE Copyright Policies

Research which has received direct funding from the National Institutes of Health or has been performed by an NIH employee falls under the NIH Public Access Policy. As part of that policy, NIH requires that full versions of these papers be posted on PubMed Central.

Any posting of IEEE copyrighted material to a third-party site must follow the provisions of the IEEE Intellectual Property Rights policy. You will need to obtain permission to reprint the material and add an IEEE copyright line to the first page of the final version of your paper. If you do not have access to the final PDF of your paper, you can request one from the Technical Editor. Even an author of the work in question must receive IEEE permission to post the material on a third-party site. Use RightsLink (http://www.ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/rights/reqperm.html) to request this permission.

Your email to IEEE should contain a full bibliographic reference for your paper, including author list, title, and publication information including journal name, volume and issue number, page range, and year. It should also indicate that you need to post the paper to PubMed Central in order to comply with the NIH Public Access Policy.

When you receive permission from IEEE, you will also receive instructions for the copyright line you must add to your paper.
