There is a unique index number for each paper. This number is of the form XX-YY-ZZ where XX is the subject category of the paper, YY is the symposium number for Proceedings up to and including the 45th or the last two digits of the year number for 1992 (when the Symposium changed name to the 1992 IEEE Frequency Control Symposium) and later years, and ZZ is the page number of the first page of the paper. For example, paper number 11-24-301 is listed under category 11-Measurements and Specifications, it is in the Proceedings of the 24th Symposium, and the paper starts on page 301 of that Proceedings volume. Paper no. 1-92-673 is category 1, in the 1992 Proceedings, and the paper starts on p. 673.
Each symposium paper is assigned to only one subject category, even though most papers touch on more than one category.
