The thirteenth International Symposium on the Applications of Ferroelectrics (XIII ISAF 2002) will be held in Nara, Japan, May 28-June 1, 2002. The meeting is sponsored by the Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) of the IEEE.

This will be a special meeting for ISAF. Not only will it be the first time the Symposium will be held in Japan, but it will also be held concurrently with the nineteenth Japanese meeting on Ferroelectric Materials and their Applications (XIX FMA 2002) and the fourteenth International Symposium on Integrated Ferroelectrics (XIV ISIF 2002).

The joint meeting, three meetings in one, will have a common registration fee, and will allow attendees to hear talks from all over the world on the applications of ferroelectrics.

The meeting will be known as the International Joint Conference on the Applications of Ferroelectrics 2002 (IFFF 2002). Tadashi Shiosaki (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) is the General Chair for IFFF 2002.

David Payne (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Tadashi Takenaka (Science University of Tokyo) are the General Chairs for XIII ISAF 2002.

Tadashi Shiosaki (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) and Masanori Okuyama (Osaka University) are the General Chairs for XIX FMA 2002.

Carlos Paz de Araujo (Symetrix) and Rudolf Panholzer (Naval Postgraduate School) are the General Chairs for XIV ISIF 2002.

The venue is the Nara-ken New Public Hall, located within the Nara National Park, surrounded by temples and shrines, and within walking distance of hotels, museums and galleries. The area is known for its history and beauty. Nara was the first capital of Japan.

The format of the conference will follow previous meetings, with plenary and oral presentations, parallel sessions, and poster presentations.

Registration is on Tuesday evening followed by a reception in the Japanese garden. The conference banquet will be on Thursday night. Social activities include a tour of Nara by night, and the presentation of a traditional Japanese performing art in the Nara-ken New Public Hall.

Nara is close to Kyoto and Osaka, approximately 40 minutes by express train. International travelers may wish to use the Kansai International Airport. The airport limousine bus service to Nara takes approximately 90 minutes.

Hotels are located within 15-30 minutes walking distance of the conference center. Taxis and buses are available.

Attendees are encouraged to make their travel plans early, including hotel reservations, since this a popular time of the year for visitors to Nara and Japan.

The World Cup soccer tournament starts the following week at locations in Japan and Korea.
