On Nonlinear Effects of Envelope Detection in Beamforming Systems

Andrea Trucco, Student Member, IEEE, and Vittorio Murino, Member, IEEE

ABSTRACT The evaluation of the effects that are due to the square envelope detection performed in an acoustic imaging system is addressed. Envelope detection destroys phase information, producing a nonlinear contribution. The importance of the nonlinear contribution is evaluated by a beam- pattern-like formulation and by several simulations. Generally, a considerable incidence of such nonlinearities has been pointed out.
