ABSTRACT The evaluation of the effects that are due to the square envelope detection performed in an acoustic imaging system is addressed. Envelope detection destroys phase information, producing a nonlinear contribution. The importance of the nonlinear contribution is evaluated by a beam- pattern-like formulation and by several simulations. Generally, a considerable incidence of such nonlinearities has been pointed out.
