ABSTRACT The beam profile of the acoustic wave produced by a disk transducer in lossy nonhomogeneous medium is calculated by the beam propagation method (BPM), which can be applied, in contrast to the conventional method, to a medium with arbitrary refractive index and attenuation coefficient distributions. The computed results agree quite well with the experimental data in the situations where the ray acoustics fails.
