Papers from the Joint Korea-United States Workshop on Nondestructive Evaluation

Joon-Hyun Lee and John G. Harris

A joint workshop on nondestructive evaluation was held at Pusan National University in Korea from May 24 to 27, 1999. It was organized by the Korean Society for Nondestructive Testing and the IEEE, Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society. The purpose was to exchange ideas and review the state of development of quantitative nondestructive evaluation in the two countries. A list of the participants and their abstracts can be found at http://www.ieee-uffc.org/abstracts/intro.html.

We asked that the papers have a pedagogical aspect so that they might form a useful starting point for future research. Accordingly, several papers review what has been done in the respective country, and some report on incomplete work that suggests directions for future research. We anticipate that the papers (as well as the web site) resulting from this workshop will give the larger community of researchers in ultrasonics and nondestructive evaluation an opportunity to review and assess the outcomes of our joint endeavor.

Acknowledgments

The workshop was largely supported by the Korean Science and Engineering Foundation with further assistance from Research Centers in the School of Mechanical Engineering, Pusan National University; the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies; the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers; the Korean Welding Society; and the IEEE Korean Chapter. All the participants thank these agencies and groups for their support.
