Guidelines for the Distinguished Lecturer Program

PURPOSE: To encourage Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control activities through speaker support of UFFC chapters, university seminars and other appropriate interest groups.

SELECTION: The Distinguished Lecturer is selected at the Fall AdCom meeting. Information about the new Distinguished Lecturer is available from that time to assist program committees in setting out their program.

TERM: The distinguished lecturer shall serve for eighteen months, beginning July 1 of the year following his/her selection.

SUPPORT: The AdCom will provide up to $15,000 per speaker to defray traveling expenses incurred in providing programs. The speaker periodically transmits travel expense vouchers to the treasurer for reimbursement.

PUBLICITY: Publicity is provided through the UFFC Newsletter, the Transactions, the UFFC web site and by mailings as appropriate. The speaker is to provide an Abstract, a biography, and a picture suitable for publication. All publicity, including informal publicity, should identify the speaker as the IEEE UFFC Distinguished Lecturer.

SCHEDULING: Usually the schedules are prepared during the summer, with major speaking activity beginning in September. Scheduling priority order is: UFFC Chapters, other IEEE activities, student seminars, and other appropriate interest groups. Interest groups are asked to contact the speaker directly. The speaker organizes the schedule to accommodate a maximum number of groups consistent with priority ordering, financial and time constraints. It is anticipated that a minimum of eighteen talks will be scheduled. A preliminary schedule should be provided for the Fall AdCom meeting, with the complete schedule provided for the Spring AdCom meeting.

PRESENTATION: The Distinguished Lecturer is selected not only because of personal stature and contribution to a field, but also because of broad knowledge of the field. The talk should be based on the full scope of work in the field of the subject covered. A basic presentation of approximately 45 minutes should be planned since questions likely will extend the total presentation time. The first slide (title slide) should identify the speaker as "IEEE UFFC Distinguished Lecturer."

PUBLICATION: A manuscript of the talk suitable for publication in the Transactions should be furnished to the Transactions Editor by January of the term of the Distinguished Lecture. This will be an effective conclusion to the speaker's term as a Distinguished Lecturer. Hard publication of the talk greatly enhances the speaker's value to the Society. It should be a definite part of the speaker's commitment at the time of acceptance of the Distinguished Lectureship.
